How RainOrRun decides

Most weather apps hand you a wall of numbers and leave the judgement to you. RainOrRun makes the call. It pulls the live hourly forecast for your location from Open-Meteo and scores four things that actually decide whether a run is worth it:

  • Rain — probability and millimetres. A 70% chance of drizzle and a 70% chance of a downpour are different runs.
  • Temperature — below 3°C or above 28°C starts costing you; below 0°C or above 32°C costs you a lot.
  • Wind — over 30km/h you feel it, over 50km/h it changes the session.
  • Severe weather — thunderstorms and blizzards override everything else.

Those scores collapse into one of three answers. Go means conditions are good, get out. Maybe means it is borderline and worth picking your hour rather than skipping the run. Don't Bother means the weather has won today.

When the answer is Maybe, the hourly strip matters more than the verdict. It shows rain probability and temperature for each of the next twelve hours and highlights the single best window, so a wet morning with a dry 6pm reads as a run you can still do — just later.

Running and the weather: common questions

Should I run in the rain?

Running in light rain is safe and often enjoyable — the key is knowing how heavy the rain will be and how long it will last. RainOrRun checks your local forecast and tells you instantly whether conditions are worth heading out for, and which hour is driest. For kit and technique, see our guide to running in the rain.

What temperature is too cold to run outside?

Most runners can safely run outside down to around 0°C (32°F) with the right base layers and gloves. Below -10°C, the risk to airways and extremities increases significantly. RainOrRun factors in temperature alongside rain to give you a combined verdict. Our cold weather guide covers the thresholds in detail.

What gear do I need to run in the rain?

For rain running, the essentials are a lightweight waterproof jacket, a running cap to keep rain off your face, and high-vis gear if visibility is low. RainOrRun recommends specific gear based on your current local conditions — see what to wear running in the rain.

What is the best time to run today?

The best time to run is the hour with the lowest rain probability and most comfortable temperature. RainOrRun shows you an hourly breakdown for today so you can pick the optimal window, and lets you look up to eight days ahead if you are planning a long run or a race.

How accurate is the forecast?

Forecast data comes from Open-Meteo, which blends national weather service models including ECMWF, DWD and NOAA GFS. Hourly rain probability is reliable a few hours out and gets progressively less certain further ahead — which is why the verdict is built around today, not next week.
